Yup. A quartet of established, and originally founded in New York, fashion houses will pack up and leave for another European fashion capital all in due’s time before New York Fashion Week. Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, Thom Browne, and Altuzarra will be New York houses no more.
Reactions are mixed. Fashion critic legend Cathy Horyn cites she is actually looking forward to NYFW highligh
ting the New York powerhouses that are still in tact that we should look forward to. For example, the likes of Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, Shayne Oliver from Hood by Air at Helmut Lang and Tom Ford returning to his namesake brand after a hiatus.
The consensus, although not clear, has been that the American socio and economic landscape is obviously rocky and may not be the prime place to raise and grow your brand even if it is at it’s mature stages. Moreover, to have your place in the Paris Fashion Week calendar can extremely bolster your brand and inject new kinds of inspiration. The French don’t take their fashion lightly.
